About Me

"I have been quilting for 15 or so years. Based in San Francisco, I am one of the few Traditional hand piecers and hand quilters in a sea of Art and Contemporary quilters located in the Bay Area. I finally found some like minded quilters amongst the Dorcas Hand Quilters, a group that meets once a week to hand quilt. I bless these ladies everyday for teaching me these time honored skills and I am now traveling around the Bay Area lecturing and teaching so quilters can rediscover the Joys of Handwork.

I also lecture about quilt history including the 1930's Chicago World's Fair Century of Progress quilt contest mystery and the controversy over the winning entry.

I have expanded my handwork into the ancient and beautiful Sashiko stitching from Japan. Sashiko pops up in the many handwork classes I teach both in person and on line. I love to include these patterns in my beginning Sashiko classes. Next step classes specialize in projects using Moyozashi (pattern Sashiko) and Hitomezashi (one stitch Sashiko) patterns. My Japanese Rice Bag, Komebukuro, class combines the art of hand stitching with Japanese inspired patterns.

Decorating this project bag allows students to express their creativity in a personal way.

Contact me at [email protected] and take a look at my website pattiehandquilts.net for more information on my lectures and workshops. You can also see what I'm working on now by subscribing to my weekly newsletter The Joy of Handwork at pattiehandquilts.substack.com.

My Workshop

"Make a Japanese Rice Bag Komebukuro"

Japanese Rice Bags, called Komebukuro, have been used in Japan for centuries to carry rice to festivals for blessing at the shrines. They are highly decorated and passed down from one generation to another. Pattie will show you how to sew together this simple bag using machine or hand stitching. Also she will introduce you to Japanese inspired decorations that are easy to replicate and will make your bag a one of a kind creation. There are simple ways to enhance the innate beauty of this bag design using fabric, various threads, and Sashiko or Western stitching. Pattie's instruction will bring out the creativity of each student.

She will supply plenty of examples to spark your imagination, including piecing, Western embroidery, freeform running stitch, and Japanese Sashiko.

She will also go over the supplies you will need for each type of decoration and how to use them effectively.

You will end up with a striking, but useful, project bag

Workshops go live on July 1st!
