About Me

"I'm a Louisiana gal, blooming where I've been planted in Destin, Florida. I've never strayed far from my roots, and my appliqué work blends the elegance of "all things Baltimore" with the lush and rich fauna of the Deep South. I began quilting in 1987 and quickly discovered my passion for appliqué, inspired by the incredible Elly Sienkiewicz and the historic Baltimore Album quilts. I fell in love with Elly's methods and, along the way, carved out my own fun path. I never hesitate to "embellish, enliven, and embolden" my appliqué‚ beads, trims, ribbons, and "findings" all find their way into my work. As I always say, "Anything goes, if it makes your heart beat faster! Since 1987, I've been deeply involved with fabrics, designing, teaching, and the retail side of quilting. I was honored to teach for five glorious years at The Elly Sienkiewicz Appliqué Academy and have had the joy of teaching internationally, sharing my appliqué techniques across the USA and Canada. I've also hosted my own annual teaching event, The Kathy Dunigan Academy of Appliqué‚ where I love spreading the word about my trademarked Broderie-Perse-lique' method. This "no-fail" technique has won over appliqué enthusiasts everywhere, and I'm thrilled to share it! As a true "people person," I derive immense satisfaction from teaching students of all levels‚ from beginners to advanced appliqué experts. I consider every student a friend, and my classes are packed with interesting, time-tested methods, grand "shortcuts," and a festive atmosphere."

My Workshop

"Bodacious Broderie Perse - with an Appliqué Twist!"

EVERY quilter and designer needs to know my fabulously easy technique in tackling "Broderie Perse." This simply isn't the way our ancestors mastered it with just a needle and thread. I've found a playful and bodacious way to take those big, beautiful booms and foliage or elaborate lions, tigers and bears and actually appliqué them down, machine or hand, using a turned edge method, not raw edge. I have a great machine stitch method that makes your stitches disappear or show if you want them to.

I use an applique foundation product with simple tools that won't be hard on your bank account. No fancy gimmicks or notions; just you and a technique that will help you find your wings! Give your designs the excellence they deserve! Let me show you how to get any motif to do your bidding, quickly and easily without all the "wrinkles" and "headaches." Lots of projects that are pieced would bloom so much more with appliqué and many quilters shy away, but no longer! This is "design and go" and every project made is unique and wonderful. You will LOVE my technique and it will open up a world of possibilities for you!

Workshops go live on July 1st!
